Curious About Someone's Past? Here's a Free Background Check

By Grant Dougan

There are several reasons why you might need to do some checking on a person's past. Maybe you have a new girlfriend or boyfriend, and you want to run a background check just to be safe. Or, maybe you need to check into the history of a potential new employee. You'll be glad to know that running a background check online is simple.

It used to be that the only way to investigate someone's past was to hire an investigator to drum up hidden information. Not only was this a time consuming and pricey endeavor, it wasn't always terribly reliable either.

The good news is that the process has gotten much easier. Thanks in large part to the web, it's quick and easy to get information on just about anyone as long as you have a working Internet connection.

There are a number of companies that offer an extensive online database that contains information on just about everyone. If you need background information, you just enter the person's name in this database and wait for your results.

You might be surprised to find that there are a lot of different kinds of information available. You may come up with past addresses, job history, marriage and family court records, and all kinds of criminal proceedings and lawsuits. It's pretty amazing how much you can find out about someone with just an internet connection.

While it's true that these companies do charge a fee for this service, it's not outrageously expensive. If you find the service useful and intend to do multiple searches, you can even pay a one-time flat fee for unlimited access to the background search database.

Before you pay for this kind of search, you might see if you can come up with some free information from Google. The way to do this is to type the person's name in the search field in quotes, for example "John Smith". If you know where the person lives, then include that information too (e.g., "John Smith" San Francisco). Then click the search button and see what you find.

In reality, chances are pretty slim that you'll actually find relevant information. It can't hurt to try, though. The only way any information will be available is if something is published online about the person, in which case Google will find it for you.

It's easy to get the "skinny" on just about anybody with an online background check. With just your internet connection and couple of minutes, you can have access to a wealth of information with this handy tool. - 20785
