Dirty Dancing Tickets" Is Good Clean Fun!

The film Dirty Dancing came out in 1987, and its story takes place even earlier, but this deceptively titled little masterpiece took the moviegoers of the world by surprise. With a cast of characters played by relatively unknown actors, and not much of a budget, it has proven to be a continuing delight. The fact that it has grossed over $300 million and set a record of more than a million sales of home videos might tell you something. The fact that it engendered two multi-platinum albums and untold singles tells you even more.

For those of us who watched Dirty Dancing on the big screen when it was first released, watching it today is almost heartbreakingly nostalgic. The story takes place, after all, in 1963, "before Kennedy was assassinated", and when it seemed the world retained its innocence. Jennifer Grey plays Frances Houseman, known to everyone as "Baby", and not minding it at all. Patrick Swayze is Johnny Castle, the street punk who has the moves as the dance instructor at the resort.

The dancing and all its side effects take place at a resort in the Catskills, where the Houseman family is taking a summer vacation. Baby's father is Dr. Houseman, physician to the rather sycophantic owner of Kellerman's Resort. His wife and Baby's older sister, Lisa, are relatively minor characters but each contributes to the subplot of the film. Baby's fascination with the dance instructor, Johnny Castle, and his partner Penny gets her and her family involved with "those people", and the fun begins.

Baby's naivet? is matched not only by her growing attraction to Johnny, but also by her desire to "change the world". When Penny has an illegal abortion, Baby gets her father to save the dancer's life. Dr. Houseman is horrified that his "Baby" is mixed up in this. To make it worse, he assumes that Johnny is responsible, and forbids her to have anything further to do with him.

However, the 17-year-old girl has fallen in love as she is learning how to do the intricate and flamboyantly sensual "dirty dancing" that Johnny is so good at teaching. Johnny, in turn, is discovering that among all the women who pursue him, he has never met one like Baby. As they develop mutual trust, they also learn to dance together. And oh, how they dance! With the Foxtrot and Potato Sack Races in the background, these two reach the heights!

Meanwhile, the Foxtrot and badminton go on, but other dramas are playing out. Lisa confides to Baby that she's planning to "go all the way" with Robbie. Baby knows that Robbie is the father of Penny's aborted child, but their father thinks Johnny is the culprit. When Johnny is accused of theft by one of his many female "conquests" - she's seen him with Baby - he is assumed guilty by almost everyone. Baby knows, and this time Frances tells the truth. Frances, as Johnny tells her, is "a grown-up name".

Dirty Dancing, with all the sensual and provocative dance scenes between Baby/Frances and Johnny, is really about innocence and growing up. Father and daughter gain a new understanding, and Baby begins the process of becoming the woman she was meant to be. The rousing finale, when Johnny makes a decision and pulls Baby out of her corner and into the spotlight, is downright thrilling to watch. In front of Housemans, Kellermans and everyone else, the two of them bring Dirty Dancing to its finest hour!

As it becomes clear that the movie's title involves a few different but cohesive elements, the experience becomes even more enjoyable. The plot is simple, but the action is believable and in the case of the dance scenes, beautifully choreographed by (also then unknown) Kenny Ortega. "Dirty" is the farthest thing from the feeling you will get from this sensual but never sleazy display of youthful energy and abandon.

The movie translates well into the Broadway stage production also. The stage musical adaptation of Dirty Dancing has played to enthusiastic theatre goers in Germany, England, Canada and even Australia, and is still showing in London. If you move fast you can still see the touring production of the musical in Boston, but it is scheduled to close March 15th of this year. The Accidental Expectant Father

I can remember very clearly the evening we found out we were going to have our first baby, it is something that will be with me forever. It was a moment of shared bliss which unexpectedly brought my partner and I closer together as a couple, and sent us on a new journey of discovery and joint purpose. This is the way the event unfolded for us.

We live on Australia's Gold Coast. Moving here was a decision we made together, moving away from our families early 2007 in favour for a beach lifestyle. As such, we often have our families visit us for weekends or weeks at a time, staying in our spare room. It really is one of the joys of living at a tourist destination.

At the start of 2008, we had my parents staying with us for a week. It was during this week we started to think we may have a little, unplanned bundle of joy on the way. For better or worse, we waited till mum and dad had left before we got that test.

On purchasing a pregnancy test, an amusing series of events unfolded. My partner ducked out into the bathroom and urinated on the stick as per the directions. Having done so, all courage departed and she ran into the living room, buried herself under a pillow and hid from it. She demanding that I go and find out what it had to tell us.

So I wandered into the bathroom to discover the telltale additional lines, our first baby was on the way. I headed back into the living room with a huge grin on my face and was met by a barrage of demands. Demands that I tell her immediately and to stop holding out on her. So I sat down beside her and softly said "sweetheart, we are going to have a baby".

This sparked a bevy of activity. She leaped off the couch and bounded into the bathroom to see for herself. When I arrived behind her, she was jumping up and down in excitement, then settled into a moment of stillness where we just stared at each other tenderly. It really was a rollercoaster, fear, excitement, love, joy, responsibility all rolled up into less than 10 minutes, what an introduction into pregnancy.

The rest of the night was simply wonderful. We spent at least an hour in the bathroom looking at the little stick, staring at each other in amazement, murmering quietly "we are going to be parents", "you are going to be a mum", "you are going to be a dad" and the like. Despite the tumultuous beginning, it turned into an evening of softness, joy and intimacy. An experience that never would have been the same if it was shared with others. An experience in which we grew together as a couple, as a family.

Pregnancy is full of such moments for a couple. Moments which bring you together and bind you with joint purpose. I'm really glad that we were introduced to pregnancy in this manner, as it gave me a perspective on how such experiences can really build a relationship and make for a happier home. Having experienced this first hand, I understood pretty quickly that it was pretty important to protect our relationship in a way that ensured these moments were experienced by us in our little circle of a new family. I quickly saw however that there were many egos who tried to take these moments away from us and claim them for themselves. I call these people the "well meaning women" as typically they are women who think they are helping, but clearly cross all boundaries of appropriate behaviour and rather, interfere in the decisions and moments which should be respected as family only.

One of my wife's friends even went so far as to interfere with the decision of who would be in our delivery room. She didn't discuss her thoughts with us. No, what she did was call my wife's sister and told her directly that we wanted her to be in the delivery room with us. I'm not sure if I am being naive in believing she had good intentions when doing this, (although, I have no idea what they may have been) however the point is to show you just how inappropriate some women get when "helping" with another families first pregnancy.

Another constant was the well meaning woman telling us that in her experience of giving birth, that medical advice we were receiving was incorrect. Yes sure, she had her children over 30 years ago, but nothing has changed and she knew better. Ridiculous. The really impressive part of these experiences though is that as the father to be, my opinions and participation in the discussion was not required. Apparently I was completely superfluous when it came to these decisions being made in my family.

Your first pregnancy - rollercoaster really is the word. You have such highs, moments of pure bliss, happiness, anticipation and intimacy. Moments which will mean more than anything else you've ever done in your life. For the first time you will create a life.

But they often are tempered by the "well meaning woman", who seems to want to compete with you for ownership of these moments. This for me was especially hard to fathom given she is was one of the people we wanted to share with and talk to about it all. (well, at least until she pushed once too often)

Expressing my feelings on the matter to all the new fathers in my circle of friends, I found that we are all the same. Pretty much every dad I spoke to had to deal with a variation of the "well meaning woman". So if you find yourself locking horns with such a person, it could be your mother, the mother in law or a good friend, don't think you are on your own. Speak to some of the Dad's you know, it won't take you long to find one who can give you some tips for dealing with the situation.

If you are facing such an issue at the moment, with a well meaning woman trying to marginalise you from being involved in the birth of your own child, there are two things in particular which you need to protect your family from.

Firstly we found that all the "great advice" we were getting, was making us second guess our doctors. The one person you really want to be confortable with and trust in a pregnancy is your doctor. So I found it was really important to us, that I made these people aware that I was not interested in their opinions of a medical nature. We basically made medical opinion regarding our family off limits to other people.

Secondly we found that we were second guessing the decisions we had mad as a couple because of all the naysayers telling us they'd do it differently. We gradually learned that that probably the most important things a couple can bring to their pregnancy and the birth of their children, are their own instincts. Other mothers' instincts and ideas were great for their pregnancies and births, but every single one is unique. And there are only two people who know what is best for your unique pregnancy and that is you and your partner. No-one else's opinion is appropriate. You need to protect your family from other people's opinions underminding the trust you have in your own instincts and those of your spouse.

As you approach the birth of your first you are likely to bump into the well meaning woman. If you do, this may be small comfort, but you are not the first and will not be the last. Remember to trust your instincts all the time, they will most likely be right. And if it gets beyond the joke, find another father to discuss the issue with. The Auto Industry Bail Out

I ask what is going on here in the USA? I am not a financial genius and I could be wrong but this is the way I see it. First we bailed out the banks because they gave out too many bad loans. These people who are financial geniuses gave out loans to people who could not afford them, hoping things would get better and the people could pay their Bills. Basically what they did was gambling. Its like me going to Las Vegas betting over and over on red figuring it will come up eventually and when it never does and I lose all my Money. I then go and ask for all of it back plus more! The Banks who gave the Mortgages where given a bail out of around 600 Billion Dollars so they could stay in business. Now as I have read for around half of that the Government could have paid off all those bad loans and helped poor American Families keep their homes. If all the bad loans where paid then would not that take care of all the Banks problems? Instead they gave super rich bankers who mad bad choices lots of Money so they can continue to make the same decisions that failed before and live their incredible lives that most of us can only dream about.

Now we have the same thing going on with the Auto industry. I do not understand why we would bail them out. It seems to me that if you run a business and you fail, well then you fail. Aren't these the same auto makers who over charge us for their cars? I can not believe none these manufactures can make a car that will last much longer and run on less gas or some other type of cheaper fuel. The Auto industry and the men who run it have been a major controlling factor in the world for many years. Aren't these the same Auto Tycoons that we have heard stories about them keeping all the new smaller car companies from starting up or "buying up" any competitor who comes up with a better Motor Vehicle for over the last half century? The story of Tucker and his dream of making a better car for hard working Americans, Was that not a true Story?

If these Auto Companies where left to go out of Business many Americans who work at these Companies factories would lose their jobs. I do care and understand that it would be very hard on them. Right now is a tough time for all Americans. But I believe that before the dust could even settle from these companies collapse, We would have many small car manufactures starting up making much better cars at lower prices. These cars would last many years longer then the current ones we drive and I can only guess would run much further on a gallon of gas or some other cheaper fuel source. I would bet that fuel would be much better for the environment. Soon after with the huge super powerful big Three of the auto industry no longer in control and maybe crushing any small start up auto manufacturers, We would have hundreds of small car companies all across the Country and soon many more jobs for everyone along with much better automobiles to drive around in that burn cleaner fuels. Who knows maybe we could even get those dam flying cars we where all promised as Kids!

This is a hard time for this country. I think it is evident in the choices the American people have made as of recent, that we now know we can no longer have the same people in power making the same mistakes. These companies and the people that have been controlling this Country have lead us down this road. It looks to me that now that we have reached the end of the road and there is a cliff. Those that have been leading us are now asking us all to trust them and jump off that cliff and fill in the gap so they can walk over us and allow them to continue leading the way !

The idea of this country has always been if you can build a better Mouse trap you can become a Millionaire.What it looks like to me is these people did not allow any one else to build a better Mouse trap. Then they sold the only traps available making them so they would last only a short time, While charging a real high price for them. Now is not the Money they are asking to be given the hard earned Money the Government has taken from the same people in Taxes who can no longer afford to buy these products! These Companies are getting the hard earned Money of the American People who can no longer afford to buy these over priced Vehicles, That last a much shorter time then the ones made 50 years ago. Now our Government who has been over taxing us for years is thinking about giving away 15 Billion dollars of our money.

What charities and programs are we going to have to cut so these Auto tycoons who have houses all over the world, Their own private Jets and pretty much anything they have ever wanted continue to get richer? Will this money come from our Schools? What about the Hungry Children of the USA? What about all those people who are out of work and those that are going to lose their homes the banks are foreclosing on? I bet 15 Billion dollars could really help them out.

America is the land of dreams. It is the Country where a man can be poor one day and rich the next if he has a good idea. There is nothing that says if you have a great Idea and then you make a Mistake and lose everything the Government will bail you out! We are not helping the poor Auto factory workers here, They most likely will loose his jobs any way. We are only helping the Rich Auto Tycoons to be able to pay for all their many luxuries! Outdoor Marriage: Success In Seven Tips

Outdoor marriages are a very valid alternative to traditional indoor weddings. Saying the vows in the open air, whether in the garden of one's home or on a sandy beach, is incredibly romantic and also a great experience for all the guests to remember.

Notwithstanding, there are lots of pitfalls that you need to take into account if you want to get married outdoors. Many things can happen differently to your plan, so toy need to be as prepared as possible.

1) Your guest's comfort should be one of your foremost thoughts. Consider the weather, for instance. If your wedding is going to be in the winter, make sure that extra blankets are available if anyone is cold. In the summer, make sure that there is plenty of shade, and in all seasons, put up a windbreaker if the area is windy. And make sure that everyone is adequately seated, and especially so elderly people.

2) There should be plenty to drink near the outside wedding ceremony area, both water to make sure that everyone stays hydrated, and more interesting drinks to keep the party going. If the wedding is in winter, hot drinks would be of order too.

3) Decoration is key to every successful wedding. While outdoor locations will need less refurbishment than indoor ones, you should still provide plenty of flowers, and a nice backdrop to the wedding ceremony. If you are getting wed in a garden, make sure beforehand that the lawn has been cut and the plants tended to!

4) Dedicate special attention to the nose and sound situation. All the guests want to hear the ceremony unfolding, so heavy surf or some other background noise are unwelcome. Use a microphone and loudspeakers if necessary.

5) Do something against insects, if there is little wind in the area. Especially so at sunset. Repelling candles are great, and giving guests lotions to drive away the critters is also a possibility.

6) Check that you have all the permits necessary to hold the wedding in the chosen outdoor location, and make sure that you are not breaking any rules with matters such as waste disposal, vehicle parking or photography.

7) Have a substitute location, preferably indoors, in the case that the weather turns bad. You wouldn't want to be caught out in a rainstorm during your outdoor wedding, so make sure that you can retreat to a roof over your head for a more traditional marriage ceremony, if necessary. - 20785

Army Skydiving Gave Us Sports Skydiving

We look upon skydiving as a fun sport nowadays, but it all began as a military solution to a problem. If you read your history of skydiving, you will see many of the important milestones of the sport, but it all started in the army.

During World War II, the military had to deploy troops into inland areas to fight the enemy, sometimes even behind enemy lines. Needless to say, they could not just march up to the battle lines, they had to be put in some other way.

Paratroopers were dropped onto the ground from airplanes and this is the beginning of skydiving as a sport. Even though those initial divers did not have the equipment we have today to make the sport safer, many of these ex army guys decided they liked the experience well enough to continue it as a sport after their army duty was done.

As a matter of fact, there have been many teams of skydivers made up of former paratroopers who became more and more expert at this skill, and eventually joined competitions and added acrobatics in the sky to their jumps.

The Red Devils are one such team that became very famous through the years. They started in 1964 and have continually been skydiving and performing aerial feats at air shows throughout the world. The crowds just love their formations and other daredevil feats.

One of the things that makes them so good is the training they have had in the army. They are used to encountering danger, they are used to working as a close knit team, and they are used to each others communication style.

All of these qualities help on a skydiving team, since many times you have no verbal communication whatsoever, and team work can mean the difference between life and death. Many army skydiving teams are still in the army and put on shows voluntarily in their spare time.

In addition, because of the expertise they have developed in this sport, a lot of ex army paratroopers have made a career out of it and started skydive schools and centers, and even offer skydiving simulators as part of their curriculum. Since they learned from the best, they are best able to transfer that knowledge to their students. These schools are very successful, in part because of such a reputation. Most people feel much more confident learning from a paratrooper who has been doing it in the military for years.

The Eye of the Tiger

Remember the theme song from the Rocky movie, "The Eye of the Tiger"?

When Rocky fought his opponent he had the focus of 'the eye of the tiger'. When that song was written they couldn't have had any idea the significance it would take on when a new Tiger took the world stage and changed sports forever.

I don't care if you are a golf fan or a sports fan or if you think there is too much hype over this one particular athlete-yes golfers are athletes.

Tiger Woods is a force to be reckoned with. I could write a book about not only his accomplishments in the sports world, but also his accomplishments as a human being, but many books have already been written. In fact I wrote about Tiger in my book, "Breakthrough to Success."

Look at what Tiger does in terms of how you live your life. Could you stand up to the level of excellence that Tiger requires of himself? If you raised your expectations, do you think you would be performing head and shoulders above your competition?

I've always been a huge fan of his because not only is he a consummate professional, he has such intense focus that you can see it on his face when you watch him on TV. I have also had the pleasure of standing just a few feet from him on more than one occasion and watching that focus in person.

Over and over again I heard the announcers at the tournament talking about how nobody would believe this if it was a movie. It would just be too much of a fantasy and the whoever wrote a screenplay that played out like this would be laughed out of a movie mogul's office. I don't know if I've ever seen a movie or a sporting event with this many interesting characters and twists and turns.

Tiger is larger than life and his life is richer, more nuanced, and more interesting than any movie script. And this weekend he was Rocky, but he wasn't fighting an opponent, he was doing what his dad had taught him. He was playing full out because that's the only way to do it.

There were so many amazing shots from this one tournament. You can probably find them all on Youtube. But it's not about the shots. It's about the measure of the man. During the tournament some of his fellow golfers, who should feel really ashamed of themselves right now, wondered out loud through their pettiness and jealousy how hurt Tiger really was.

Tiger on the other hand downplayed his injury to not take the focus off the Open while he played through incredible pain that would have made almost any other player call it quits, especially when he was so far back that it didn't look like he had any chance at all of winning.

And yet, Tiger not only didn't quit, he forced a playoff and played another 19 holes on Monday. And then he made the impossible inevitable by winning...again!

Watching him play in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines for 4 days instead of the usual 3 was a treat and at the same time painful. My heart ached every time I saw him wince when he hit the ball or when his caddy pulled him up by the arm when he couldn't get up by himself or when the pain of taking another stroke had him almost doubled over in pain.

And I wondered how he could keep going, where did he find the inner strength to focus enough to pull it out day after day?

Ironically during the tournament there was a commercial running with audio of his dad talking about how Tiger would never meet anyone else as mentally tough as him in his entire life.

He certainly proved his dad right that weekend. I'm sorry I won't be seeing him play the rest of the summer, but I know he'll be back next year better than ever because striving for excellence is just his natural way of being.
